Tarts, container/votive wax?

Candlemaking Best Practices

Does anyone have experience making tarts? If so, which wax should be used, container or votive?

I wish everyone out there the best of luck in their business ventures!!!!

Tarts

I have had excellent results with using the Votive/Pillar Blend of soy wax to make my tarts. They slip right out. Also, I use a little more FO for my tarts. But I charge $1.50 per tart. I found that using 1.5 oz per lb really keeps a long lasting cold and hot throw. I have tried using the container wax and they do not last as long. I have tested many, many times and in many different enviroments and find that these two variables are what have made the difference for me. Have you tried anything different that works?

Re: Melters for tarts

Hello blueridgemercantile,
Check out Oddity, Inc. for your melters. They have a great selection and great prices. There is also no minimun order. I believe the web site is: www.oddity.com. They will send you a catalog.

Carol thanks for the info.

I made my first tarts two weeks ago put three or four in my melter, and I have had it not every day, but most every day and the smell is still great, I'm definately looking into some burners.

tarts

Hi,

I was told you can use left over container wax as well as votive wax.

I made some with container wax but did not like the scent throw. I like a strong throw and only used 1 oz of FO instead of my usual 1.5 oz per pound.

I wanted to see the difference in burning times so I made some with votive wax, vybar, and my usual 1.5 oz of FO. Unfortunately I have not had a chance to burn them.

wax for tarts

Since you want your tart to come out of a metal mold, then the best wax to use is the votive wax. This wax was developed to release easily from the mold. Many tarts are in a mold that is "tapered" so the container wax should still slip out... it will make a softer candle however.
The container wax will not come out of straight sided molds such as pillar molds.

I use the votive wax and it's working great!!

I've only made a few batches. They are burning well and holding the scent well. In fact I only bought 10 molds and want more without waiting for more molds, I had a pampered chef mini muffin pan and it's working great! Does anyone know where we can get the burners for these? I've also heard to rename them as yankee has trademarked tarts.

Re: Tarts

We also use a Pampered Chef Mini Muffin pan and are have wonderful success with them.

We use the term “Melts” instead of “Tart” since it is not trademarked.

Great minds must think alike because that is what I named mine .

How do you package yours and what do you retail them for? I've also seen them named cakes.

Packaging and retailing melters (tarts)

Hello jen,
I was using just plain plastic food wrap for about 8 months. I have since graduated to a shrink wrap machine. Too much month left at the end of the money. Had to wait a while. I put my little label on top and sell them for $1.50. I get my pricing from going out and checking out other candle suppliers prices. I like to keep in line with other candle makers. Most candle makers charge the same as I do. I believe that we are working with a very high end candle and with that in mind, I charge accordingly. It also depends on where you are from. But I definitely would take a little road trip and check out your competitors prices. When I first started I was a little skeptical about charging the same prices or more. Now I am right up there with the best of them. AND WE ARE! Later, Carol

Shrink Wrap Machine

Carrol,
Could you tell me more about your shrink wrap machine. I've been looking into shrink wrapping votives but I'm not sure which route to go. So far I've found two methods. One is to shrink the wrap with a heat gun and the other is to use a vaccuum packaging machine. Your thoughts??

I've got some cello bags I am going to package them . . .

6 to a bag? Is that too many? Do you wholesale them or not? I have a few accounts who had asked about them, but I told them I was still testing them. Thanks.
