Table of 12

While it is a good thing for members to be able to get together ocassionally, it seems inappropriate to penalize a member in good standing who has been a great participant on the board here for not being able to attend the congress for reasons that may be hard to control at this point in time, ie money, work commitments, family, whatever.

This community is mainly an internet community and the participation here should be taken in to account, as were are around the country and reliant on this community more than those that may choose to attend the congress.

Just playing devil's advocate. :)

Table of Twelve Attendance at the Congress

Hello,
I think the first time the Table of Twelve is elected, they need to be at the Congress. Mainly because it is such a short time before the Congress. However, thereafter, I think the best way of running is to have the Table of Twelve ask someone to run for the office. Letting it be known that it is a highly appreciated and coveted position and that they will still have to 'run for the election.' Otherwise most people look at an election like another job to do instead of a welcome position to look forward to and one that will take them up a notch in their career. We need to make sure that we always ask two more people than there are offices. Now there will always be someone who will lose, but that is the way it is supposed to be. This is the way we do it in Wisconsin and it seems to work very well.

Table of Twelve Attendance at the Congress

I agree with Carol & Dan. Since this is a critical catalyst point for the Congress, I feel attendance should be a requirement for 'this' election. I don't feel that it should necessarily be a requirement for future elections though.

Good thoughts and insights, Carol and Dan...

Thanks, Carol and Dan, for your comment. We are planning to fill the Table during this 'pump priming' election with members where half will fill one-year terms, and the other half will fill two-year terms. This way we'll have continuity from year to year as half the Table seats come up for election each year. Also, by having two-year terms, folks will know that this is a significant and important leaderdhip commitment.

With one-year terms, you run into the problem of things turning into a popularity contest and nothing truly useful getting done.

Personally, I am on the fence a bit with the Congress attendance requirement for this upcoming election. I know there will be some good potential leaders with true interest in this community who will not be able to attend the Congress. But I am also swayed by your insight that says this critical first year of kicking off the Guild is a 'special case' situation. Folks attending the Congress will very likely have an edge in understanding the exciting possibilities of what we can evolve the Chandler Guild into as an innovative collaborative business network.

Thanks again, Carol and Dan, for your thoughtful comments.
