not all the wax burning in small glass containers

Candlemaking Best Practices

Hi All, Well I'm finally filling some small glass containers 2 3/4 diameter and have used the cd 14 and 16 wicks. When it burns it doesn't go all the way to the outside. Is it supposed to? Do I need a larger wick? I thought the wax would all burn leaving a pretty much clear container. Any advice really appreciated. Katy in Colorado

Melt Pool

Hi Katy,

How long do you burn the candle for? As they say you need one hour per inch. With containers probably it won't hurt to burn the candle a little longer. That will give you an idea of how large the melt pool is.

Can you use CD 18? You might want to try that.
Hope this helps.

Katie,
Just so you don't feel alone, I've been having the same problem. I thought a cd16 was too large for the jars, but the cd14 didn't melt all the way to the outside.

Wax Problem

Katy

The problem may not be the wick it may be the wax. We have been making our soy wax candles in containers the same way for about 10 months now and they always work great except we have had two times when the candles did not turn out right, i.e. cracking, tunneling, etc.

The problem turned out to be wax related, so check with the wax supplier/manufacturer and see if you got a bad batch

Wick size

Katy - I have to agree with Brian. Something seems awry here. You are using a very big wick for that size container. I have a 5oz apothecary jar that is 2 1/4" and I use the CD-10. It creates a great melt pool. Are you adding anything, such as Vybar? What temperature are you pouring at?

Bitter Creek Candle Supply (www.candlesupply.com) has a terrific selection of wicks and a technical help section showing what other people have used in their containers. Make sure you look at the ones using soy wax. I just sent them all my data for a 6-hour burn test I did on 3 different container sizes. You may have to do some tests using different sizes and types of wicks. The extra work will pay off as you will have a better product and your customers will notice.

not all the wax burning in small glass containers

Without knowing which wax you are using, my guess would be pillar/votive blend. I use the container blend for containers and get a full meltpool in a 2 3/4" jar using a cd 12. A cd 10 was just slightly too small and a cd 11, if there was such a thing, would have been perfect. I assume you are using phytowax.

not all wax burning

Thanks for your reply. I am using phytowax container blend and I used a cd 16. Could it make a smaller meltpool than a cd 12 ? I will now try a cd 12. When you say a full meltpool does it go out to the edges and melt it so none is left on the glass? Since I'm new to this I don't know what is the best to shoot for. With the cd 16 I had about a 1/8th " wax left on one side. Katy

Meltpool

Gosh Katy, I'm stumped on this one. Maybe there is a difference manufacturer to manufacturer with the cd series wicks. I get mine from Paramold and have had consistant quality. A cd 16 should do at least a 3", maybe 3.25" container. I use an HTP 1212 in my 26oz Apothecary Jars and get a full melt in those as well.

The jar I use the cd 12 in is the very same jar Home Interior uses, the Hexagon shaped 12 oz with metal lid.
