Sink hole in candles

Candle Production and Quality SIG

We've been having problems with a sinkhole/crater in the 18 oz and 28 oz candles we are pouring. The top forms over but then later, after full cooling, there is a crater or sinkhole on the top.

How can we prevent or fix? We are not pouring at a high temperature -- 140-150. We are not pouring too quickly, either.

Sink Holes

We use a small torch with a heat gun attachment, which works well, but heat guns can be time consuming, and cost prohibitive if you are ding a large volume of business.

A “top off” pour works well on containers that are not see through, because a top off pour almost always leave a line between the layers.

Sink Hole

Near as I can tell this is air. I use heat to "resurface" the top of the candle. A heat gun or propane torch will work. Avoid butane or other type lighters as they will cause blackening.
