3" dia. Pillar Problems

Chandler Guild Training Ground | Candlemaking Best Practices

We have yet to get a 3” diameter pillar of any length that does not crack after burning it at least once. As soon as it cools we start seeing cracks.

We have tried Soyawax pillar with 0, 5, 10, & 15% steric as well as a mix of pillar wax and container wax at 75 pill. /25 cont. and 50/50 all with the same results.

Has anyone made a 3”x6” pillar with no cracking? And if so what was the formula if we may ask.

3" Pillar Suggestion

Stearic makes the pillar wax harder and possibly encourages cracking. You might consider adding 1 to 3 T. of solid Crisco per pound of wax. Pour cooler in a room temperature mold and cool slowly.

try 20% stearic

I was getting advice today from someone today that is already making soy pillar candles and she is using 20% stearic in her pillars. The wax she is using is a votive soy wax from Soyawax. I personally haven't tried it yet, but when I do I will post my results. I need to order the stearic so it will be a few days before I will have anything to experiment with.

Thanks

I guess there is no harm in trying 20%, stearic is cheap. Thanks I will give it a try.

Still cracked

Unfortunately, even with the 20% staeric it cracked shortly after lighting it, and severely once I extinguished it and it cooled.

Pillar Cracking

What wick are you using. The wick affects how the pillar will burn. Try smaller wick than what is recommended for paraffin. That could help
