Chandler Best Business Practices

Like most of everyone else who has joined the Chandlers Guild we have been watching and waiting for something to happen, and as many have noticed nothing has.

I would like to get the ball rolling on a post made Submitted by blueridgemercantile on 03/19/2003 - 06:24

They Write:
“I don't know about anyone else but I plan to either attach a small tag to my candles or have an information sheet at the site of my displays that briefly lists the pros of soy wax candles. I was wondering what you guys think about deciding together on a short list of these pros that we can all uniformly use in our advertising or labeling. Let me know if anyone else is planning to attach any of this info. to their candles. “

Carol, Randi and I all agree this is a great idea and is a good place for this group to come together to start creating a standard that we all can agree with and adhere to.

We have drafted a display card that reads as follows:
==================================
Soy Candles
Protect the Environmental
Benefit American Farmers & Businesses
Won’t Fill Your Home With Oily Soot

COMPANY NAME soy wax candles
are made primarily of genetically unmodified
soybeans, with other botanical oils to improve
burning, as well as color and scent retention, are
non-toxic, and biodegradable.

Soy wax candles typically burn 25% longer than
paraffin candles, and unlike paraffin, soy wax
does not emit toxic compounds that build up in
your home, and your lungs.

Soy wax comes from a renewable resource that
benefits both American Farmers & Businesses.
Where as paraffin comes from refined crude
oil, which is not renewable, and the purchase of
paraffin candles benefits Oil Barons, primarily
from the Middle East.

This is also printed on the back of our business cards.

We are more than happy to take the lead in getting this going, so please contact us directly if you are uncomfortable with posting to the Guild Community, with suggestions and comments.

Soy Wax information tag

Providing product information with soy wax candles is a great idea. Either an information tag, brochure, label, etc. would greatly enhance the value of the product. It's important, however, to be sure that the information we distribute is accurate. My wife and I are very new at this, having made two candles each at Michael's Saturday workshop on March 22. I asked him if soy wax was made from non-GMO soybeans and was told that no such distinction was made, since soy wax was not intended for human consumption. (Michael, please correct me if I misunderstood what you said.) If that is the case, we need to be careful to not state that our candles are "made primarily of genetically unmodified soybeans." The fact that they are made of soybeans grown by American Farmers is boast enough, when the main alternative is an inferior product made of Middle Eastern oil.

My Apology

I was under the impression they were genetically unmodified soybeans, I will remove this statement.

Thanks for letting my know.

No silver platter, no bankroll to make it so...

Hello Bob, Carol and Randi,

Thanks for your valuable contribution about display tags. We'll add this content to the 'Best Business Practices' section of the community-written Chandler Guild Handbook.

But let me also address your concern about the apparent lack of anything happening here on the Chandler Guild web site.

As you probably know, the Chandler Guild is not a venture-funded, next-BIG-thing undertaking. Mike and Lynette Richards are social entrepreneurs. They are rich in ideas and commitment to making a difference in the World. They are not rich in money in the pocket. Same with Sohodojo Jim (me) and Timlynn.

So don't expect Chandler Guild to leap out of the gate at 100 miles per hour. The fact that this community web site is up and functioning is a big first step. But as I said in my 'Lurk or Lead'... Where do you fit in? diary entry, what happens here is largely a function of our individual self-organizing gumption and shared community spirit.

Your 'getting the ball rolling' is EXCATLY what it takes to help us reach critical mass, that is, to spark the energy of a sustainable on-line community.

It is happening already. Your entry and a handful of other submissions are starting the 'best practices' information sharing aspect of the Guild. As more of us make such contributions, this web site will become a more valuable resource. More visits lead to more contributions that lead to more visits and so on.

The Chandler Guild won't happen for you. It can and will happen because of you and folks like you.

Finally, I can say that both Mike and Lynette and Jim and Timlynn are each working in significant advancements that will help the Chandler Guild. We'll be having more to say about these developments over the next few days.

We hope you'll 'stay tuned' and see what happens. And better yet, we hope you'll join in and help make this community a valuable resource for yourself and others like you.

Thanks for being part of the Chandler Guild.

Once again I apologies

My remark was not meant negatively. I have been on far to many lists that have no real substance behind the posts. The lists were started under grand ideas, but due to lack of leadership, they fizzled. I was stepping up to try and keep this from happening to the Chandlers Guild because I see real potential behind it.

I had noticed that the majority of the posts at this point have been fluff about how we all got started. Although this is nice to know, it does not help us grow as an industry, or as a group. That is why I made the comment, and offered to spearhead this information card.

I understand that the Guild founders are not wealthy, and do not have tons of time and money to pour into the Chandlers Guild. My remarks were not meant to be negative in any way, I was simply pointing out what I saw, and made an offer to fill a gap.

Sincerely

Not too worry, Bob... my reply was a clarification :-)

Hey Bob,

Not to worry. I wasn't taking the comment negatively. It was an opportunity to remind folks that this is very much a "We're all in this together," David and Goliath kind of business undertaking.

The greatest challenge for an on-line community is hitting 'critical mass' where the value of what's on-line becomes a magnet for folks to return often and, with a developing sense of comfort, begin to contribute content.

That's where folks like you and other 'early adopters' come into play. It will be through our initial scratchings on our relatively blank slate that we'll begin to hit this critical mass.

I also wanted to foreshadow to folks that not everything that is moving forward is reported here yet. There will be interesting developments in relatively short order and we'll report on them here as soon as we can.

Finally, Bob, please don't get 'gun-shy'. Folks like Mike, Lynette, Timlynn and me... we're entrepreneurial social activists. By our genetic make-up, we have thick skins and vision-driven energy. So nothing said here will dampen our spirits or hurt our feelings.

We welcome your comments and questions. And we are truly happy that you are becoming a vocal leader in our self-organizing community.

Keep up the Good Work... and make sure you're having fun, too!
