Wax is too soft--Additives?

Candle Production and Quality SIG | Chandler Guild Training Ground

Hi! I'm still fairly new to soy candlemaking and am very new to the guild, but so far its been pretty helpful. Before I knew about Soyawax brand, I had already purchased a large amount of soy wax from a different supplier. In the future, I'll be buying my soy waxes from Mike, but I have way too much wax to get rid of it and buy new.

The wax I have makes great container candles, but I've begun to make tarts and votives also, with not so great results. When its cooled, the tarts and votives are so soft that they often crack or the ruffled egdges of the tarts break off!

Since I'm new to candlemaking, I haven't quite figured out the different additives that are out there yet. Like what does stearic do? Vybar? etc. Could somebody please give me some advice on what hardens the wax, what you have to add to be able to put in extra fragrance oil (over 1 oz. per lb) and what will keep the candles from being so soft and crumbly!

Thanks for any advice and help!

Too soft wax

Hi,

The wax you are using is not made for tarts/votives/pillars.

You need one made specifically for non-container items.

If you do not have votive/pillar wax, if I am not mistaken, you can mix 51% container wax with 49% steric acid to make tarts/votives/pillars. (This is the ratio I have used without any problems).

If I am incorrect, hopefully someone in the guild will correct me.
