using stearic acid

Candle Production and Quality SIG | Candlemaking Best Practices

hello everyone. i'm very new to this and have started a little tiny business out of my kitchen :) i'm doing container candles w/essential oils. my question is...when adding stearic acid(hoping that this will make the crackling go away), how do you figure out the percentage to use? i've read that 3-5% is suggested...if i'm using 2 cups (16 oz) of phytowax to make an 8 oz. container candle, then i should use .8 oz of stearic, right? how the heck does that translate to something i can measure if i don't have a scale...i know there's probably a table somewhere that converts this but it eludes me. also, are there any essential oils that you would recommend staying away from? just trying to figure out my next order. thanks for any help.

EO's

Hi,

How do you figure out how much EO to use with your candles?

I have looked, and looked, and looked and have found nothing!

Thanks.

Isabel

EOs

i think i found it somewhere on this website...if you're using only EOs and no frangrances you would use 1oz of oils to 1lb of wax....i thought it sounded like alot but that's what's been working for me.

Amount of EO's

Hi,

One ounce of an Essential Oil per pound of wax seems like a lot! Not to mention a bit on the expensive side!

I would be worried about the affects from some of the EO's. Some EO's are quite powerful and dangerous if not used correctly!

Are you using Essential Oils or Fragrance Oils (FO)?

If you are using FO's then your ratios are fine. If EO's double check with the source you used. When using EO's you use less than when using FO's.
