Anyone else had problems with a fuel like smell???

Chandler Channel News | Candle Production and Quality SIG

I have not been here for ages have been too busy the last month sorry. I have had two customers complain about a fuel smell when the candles are burning. One was a candy cane votive and the other a fresh linen container candle. The fact it's happened twice now with two scents and waxes gives me a red flag. Anyone else had this problem or know what is causing it? Thanks for any advice. I will be gone again though. December 27th we are heading south to watch those Hawkeyes play in Tampa. Have a great holiday all!!

Fuel Smell in Candles

We have also had a little trouble with fuel smells. Several resources I've looked at said that the fuel smell likely comes from the use of liquid dyes. Supposedly anything more than 3 drops of liquid dye per 4 lbs of melted wax can contribute to the fuel like smell. We have basically stopped using liquid dyes and really haven't had much complaint about fuel smell since then.
Hope this helps,

Fuel Smell

Hello Jen,
I had a particular problem with a fragrance that had a fuel smell. It was grapefruit. I could not believe the smell. But it did smell just like fuel when burning. I did not sell any of it and I discontinued producing it. I will try some different fragrance companies after the first of the year when I have more time. I would certainly start by testing your fragrances. Just use your soy wax and the fragrance oil. See how that burns. Then test with some color in it. Sometimes I have noticed that the color, when blended with the fragrance oil, will produce a fuel smell. I use liquid color for some of my candles and dry powder for others. It simply depends on what my end results are upon testing. Blends of different fragrances and colors will certainly have different results. I hope that helped some. Clear as mud, eh?
Take Care,
Carol

Fuel Smell

Hi,

I have read where some fruit scents may give off a fuel smell.

I tried to find where I remember reading it but was unable to. If I find it I will let you know.

I am sorry I was not much help.

All Phytowax products are 100% Vegetable, so it cannot have a fuel smell.

Isabel is correct with looking at certain fragrance oils as the probable source of such a smell.

If you are getting a "fuel" smell the troubleshooting process should zero in on fragrance oil. Many fragrance oils in the candle industry have a petrochemical base.
