3/4" Dia. candle stick problem

I have been working on a candle stick with straight sides that is ¾” in diameter, but every attempt I have made dripped.

I have tried Soyawax pillar & Eco Wax pillar with zero to 20% staeric, and wick sizes from 20-45 play, #1, #2, #3, 1/0, & 2/0 all from Paramold.

Has anyone else been able to make these without having them drip, and if so would you consider sharing the wax formula and wick size.

Thanks

Candle Stick Problem

Bob & Carol,
Do you mean a taper? If you do, then this is what works very well for me. I have tried using molds for my soy tapers and it does not work. They must be hand dipped. I weigh out my wax to 10 lbs of dry wax. I add 5% vegetable stearic acid. I melt it right in my dipping vat that is inside a large pan of hot water. I allow the water to come to 190 degrees. I then turn my heat down so the temp stays at 160 degrees. With a 1/0 flat braided wick I measure out two times, plus 4 inches of wick. I tie a weight to the end. I use regular washers one would use on a screw. They are really inexpensive and are just the right weight. I get them at my local hardward store. I take an old wire clothes hanger and cut it to about 6-8 inches long. I bend it so that the wick can hang on the ends of the wire. I then add any color or fragrance I want and blend for at least two minutes. I then start dipping my wick. I use an old wooden clothes hanger to hang my candles on for drying. I will get about 20 going. By the time I am at number 20 it is time to start with the first one. You want to hold the first dip in the hot wax for at least 30 seconds to absorb the hot wax into the wick. Thereafter and with succeeding dips you only want to dip into the wax and very slowly take the candle out. So, it is just slowly in and slowly out. I also make water dipped tapers. But that is a whole different process and one that requires a lot of skill and patience. Maybe next year I will think about doing a workshop on making tapers. They are truly beautiful and burn like a dream, no drips. I have a lot of customers who want them. Don't know if that helps. Please feel free to e-mail me with more questions.

Candle stick problem

Hi Carol

Some would call it a taper, but it is not tapered at all, it is ¾” diameter from top to bottom, they are made in a piece of pipe, I have ¼” ones and ½” ones that both work wonderful, but have a request for a large order of ¾” ones.

I have seen them at other places but without knowing the type of wax and the additives it is impossible to reverse engineer it, all you will get is the wick size, not much help.

Thanks for the advise any way Carol, we were considering dong some dipped tapers, so you did at least give me a good place to start there.

If you don’t mind sharing some more details, how wide do you make the dipped tapers for that size wick?

Dipped Tapers

Bob & Carol,

Hello there. The dipped tapers are from 1/4" wide (birthday candles) to 1" wide. It takes a lot of dips to get to 1" but it is sure worth it. They are awesome! And they burn like a dream.

I was in one of my wholesale account stores and a lady came in that ask for a stick candle. I guess the long (12") stick candles are really popular now for birthday cakes. Anyhow, I tried one. I only dipped it 5 times. After drying on my "clothes dryer,' I lay them out flat. I make different colors, but they are unfragranced. They really burn nice too.

You can use your 1/0 wick and just play around. The way that I make birthday candles: I measure out a piece of wick. (I usually use an 18" piece.) I dip this piece (as per above dipping instructions) 4-5 times. After drying, I lay it flat, cut and measure candle lengths.

Well gotta go. Have a lot of orders to fill.
