Any ideas for a pioneer day demonstration?

Thought I'd see if anyone had any ideas, I am doing a demonstration at the local pioneer days this weekend. I was just going to let the kids make tealights to take home. Any other suggestions? Thanks.

Jen

There is nothing like a bean, nothing in this world!

Hi Jen,

I think when it comes to meeting and talking to folks directly, there is nothing like having some actual, unprocessed soybeans on hand.

As we saw at the Guildmember Trade Show at our first Congress, there a number of ways to make a very visible and understandable connection between soy wax candles and soybeans. Folks like the Talbot's and their Long Creek Candle Company product line (look for pictures at the above link) make that connection real by incorporating beans into their packaging and into their booth displays.

Once soybeans are turned into a candle, it is harder to make that connection of your candles being an value-added 'ag' product from a renewable resource. You don't see pools of oil oozing out of the ground when you look at a paraffin candle. So helping to make that distinction real is a good idea. Hey! That gave me an idea...

Put one of your candles in a nice bed of happy, health soybeans on one side of your table. Then put a paraffin candle 'nestled' in a pool of used motor oil from your or your neighbor's old pick-up truck at the other side of the table. And have a sign, "Which would you prefer to burn in your home?"

Yeah, yeah, it's the worst kind of Yellow Journalism... but hey, it might sell some candles! :-)
